Basic RiderCourse® (BRC)

Basic RiderCourse® (BRC)

The Basic RiderCourse® (BRC) is designed for beginner riders with little or no previous motorcycle experience. This course is mandatory for those drivers under the age of 18 who wish to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. Students will learn about different types of motorcycles, their controls, how they operate and will begin developing and practicing the mental and motor skills necessary for safe riding.

The BRC combines classroom instruction with on-cycle riding practice. Class times vary, but students will spend a minimum of five (5) hours in the classroom and ten (10) hours riding. All riding exercises are conducted at slow speeds on a closed range. The skills taught during the course include: rider and motorcycle preparation, defensive riding strategies, riding in a straight line, cornering, braking, shifting, clutch-throttle control, and basic crash avoidance techniques.

Students take a written evaluation and a riding evaluation as part of the course. Students who complete the course and pass both of the evaluations receive a completion card that will allow a motorcycle endorsement to be added to their license. Non-NH residents should confirm that their home state DMV will accept the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse® completion card.
Motorcycles are provided. Students are responsible for providing the following protective clothing: eye protection, full fingered gloves, sturdy footwear that completely covers the ankles, long sturdy pants and a long sleeve top such as a jacket or sturdy shirt. Students may bring their own DOT approved 3/4 or full face helmet or use one of our loaner helmets which are available at each course.

Students who do not arrive on time for any portion of the course will not be allowed to continue, and will not be refunded.

Basic RiderCourse® Highlights

Enrollment Requirements

Register for a BRC Course

To register for a New Hampshire Motorcycle Rider Training Class, please visit our on-line enrollment site Motorcycle Rider Training Classes. If you would prefer to register using a paper application, please contact our office at (603) 227-4025 to have the forms sent to you.

Once I pass the course…

Students will perform a written evaluation and will have a riding evaluation during the course. If the student passes both of these evaluations, he or she will receive a New Hampshire Motorcycle Rider Training Program completion card. The student can take that completion card to the NH DMV within one year and receive their motorcycle endorsement on their driver license. Non-NH residents will receive a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse® completion card and should verify with their home state DMV if it is accepted. Note: There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass.

If I am unsuccessful…

Although the BRC is designed for beginners, not every rider passes the class on the first try. Students who do not pass the first time may register for a second class and try again. Students who complete the entire class but do not pass the riding evaluation may be eligible to take a Intermediate Rider Course. Students should call the Motorcycle Rider Training Office at (603) 227-4025 for more information.
